DIY A-spec shift knob install

First go buy yoru shift knob from Honda or from someone that has it... I got it from the dealer and it came in a box... out of the box there will be the knob it self as well as our items in a plastic bag as shown in the picture below (from left to right and top to bottom the items are
1) ring that will replace the stock silver ring (one side is smooth the other is rough)
2) tube that will fit into the ring when you put the center console back on the car and will hold the collar up (note the gaps between each "leg")
3) the crusher that will go in between the knew shift knob and the tube so the tube doesnt crash if you over tighten the knob. and
4) the zip tie that will go around the ring

Start by taking off the Console from your car.. to do this just pull at where the cup holders end sorry for the bad pic but i only had my cell, You might want t use a cloth to go between your fingers and the console caz it might give you a scratch or something ... you will have to pull pretty hard if it is the first time you are removing the console so pull with all your strengths... PS remember to remove the old shift knob (or any shift knob) for that matter before pulling. Once you get the front two clips out there will be 4 more (2 on each side) you will get the hang of it once the first two are out.

Once you have the console out you have to flip the sleeve inside out as in the pic below

you can see that the old silver ring is still in and that there is a ziptie that is around the collar, carefully cut the ziptie so you can remove the silver ring (becareful not to cute into the collar) For me, i used a steak knife and carefully cut sideways caz i couldnt fit a pair of sizzors into the gap to cut the ziptie. After you remove the ziptie and the ring it should look like this

Now you can take the new ring and put it where the old silver ring was with teh rough side facing down (or having it inside the collar while it is inside out). Position it where the old silver ring has been and use the new ziptie provided and carefully tie it into place, it should look something like this after you are done

you can now flip the collar back out so and put the tube into the ring. Note that inside the ring there are three little dimples. make sure that the gap's on the bottom of the tub fit into the collars dimples. When you are finished pushing it in the collar should look like this. (if you did it wrong the tube will pop out when you try to put the console back onto the car so if it fits it is probably done rite)

Now you are pratically finished, all that is left is putting the console back onto the car... which is just the reverse of how you took it out... meaning you have to slip the back end of the console first and push it in and then follow towards the front. if the tube poped out when you try to fit it thru the shifter don't worry just try to put the tube back in right (there is only one way it can fit into the ring and the shifter so if it fits it is right and just try till it fits. After you finally got everything in place there are just two more things that you need.. the crusher and the knob .. first put the crusher on as if you were putting on the knob... note that the flat side of the crusher faces up (see in the pic below if you don't know what i mean). After you screwed the crusher on screw in your knob till it reaches the bottom... you might notice that the numbers might not be stright and what not but to fix that just fiddle around with twisting the crusher and knob. here are some pics of the finish product as well as a shot of how the crusher should look like.

goodjob i kinda did the same thing but i bought another larger gromet and its held up with that.
So I can just twist the knob off if i wanted to take it off? I tried twising mine off but damn, it must be on tight. Good write-up though.

If you have the original knob you need to grab the collar below it and pull down. You don't need to yank it, just grab firmly from both sides and pull down. After it detaches you can unscrew the knob.

if you are talking about the stock one.. you do what VTEC_inside said.. just pull down the stock collar with the silver ring and then twist it off, the first time I tired to twist the stock knob off it was pretty tight so maybe give it more strength... if it is the aftermarketone you just twist it off, i am not sure if another knob will fit on because of the crusher being in the way and some of the after market knobs migth twist below the crusher so it might not fit.... so if you are planning to use a knob other than the a-spec of Type R *same thing but different colour letters* you might have to take out th crusher or it might not screw all the way down
That collar/tube is not suppose to protrude out of the ring like that. The way I installed mine is have the ring flushed to the knob. How ever did you get that tube to stick out like that...it's hideous. The purpose of that tube is to keep the ring from falling too far down. Not sure if you know what I am talking about but it should be boot > ring > nut > knob. No part of that plastic tube should be visible. :)

edit: I will get a picture of mine when I get home from work.
I'm curious to see that riceman. I know what you are talking about, but mine ended up just like Clish's. I've found other pics that show it the same. Even the install instructions show the plastic tube.

Even if I were to pull the ring up, I don't think it would stay there.

After using it for a bit, I don't think I'd want it flush up there either.
is there any way i could just get the collar from the aspec knob? is there a specific part number for it or does it only come if i buy the knob itself?

have pics? not too sure if i understand... or more like i don really know if that is possible with the tube.. did you put it in upside down?
is it possible to buy only the ring and tube at the dealers?
Damn it guys I didn't have time to snap the pics last nite. I will snap a pics tonite when I get home. My work computer don't have bluetooth so can't upload camera pics even...

The ring on the boot should sit slightly lower then the nut under the knob. the ring is big enough to hug around the nut.
I tried sliding it up a bit last night, but its pretty darn happy where it is.

I kinda like it as is... Not going to lose sleep over it. There is only about 3/4 inch of that tube showing.

No, there isnt a way to just buy those parts. Believe me i've tried. My dealership says i have to buy the whole kit, including the a spec knob and all, even tho i have the type r knob already...:thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow
btw the a-spec shift knobs are "discontinued" meaning that you can't buy them anymore (at least here in canada.. but considering they call honda North america it might also be for the states)
just bought a knob today and am selling my Type-R knob. hopefully it will just be like swapping it in terms of the cost
so let say i can still buy the whole kit from acura. how much can i sell the aspec knob for?

many people buy the knob for the piece you want LOL~

but personally i love the knob ... it is pretty heavy ... and feels awesome... i had the mugen one that looked like a dildo.. and the a-spec one is noticeably more heavy than it and felt much better.

does the itr one weigh the same as the a-spec? i only want these parts because i already bought the itr knob and its on its way. the install with these parts actually look alot better than what most other people do (ex flipping the stock ring upside down).

Sorry guys, I already have the a-spec knob on there but acura installed it and it isnt PERFECTLY lined up. I am guessing I would just have to undo the nut first or twist the knob. I am just too lazy to read right now and before.
Thanks anyways.
sorry for stealing your pic, but anybody got the part #'s for these two parts?
