Hey guys Im writing a paper for my ENG 102 class and i need some help with some field research. Im writing it about the idea of people buying domestic cars just because they live in the United states. Im sure you all know that one person who always buys GM cars and will never buy anything made elsewhere. Im just looking to see if you guys have an opinion on this. If anybody has an input on this that would be great ! Thanks

My stepdad will buy nothing but Ford because that was his first car he ever purchased. He's ex navy and drives Lincolns (still ford) and is origionally from PA. He was born in '44 so that gives you the time frame. When I was shopping for cars when I got out of high school in '05, his graduation present to me was to co-sign for me to be able to buy a new car. Needless to say he was highly upset due to the fact that I was only looking at Import vehicles and was leaning towards Subaru and Honda. After a bit of arguing that I'm going to pay for a car I actually want, he caved in and I have my RSX. His other argument was that I am helping japan take over the U.S without firin a single shot. To this day he still denies the fact that my car is much more reliable and has proven itself after 105k of hard hard miles and the only thing I have ever had to get fixed was my passenger window regulator and that was just two days ago. He has owned all of the different generations of the Lincoln Navigator, a Lincoln Blackwood, a '99 Ford F350 Superduty Turbo Deisel, and now currently drive a Lifted Lincoln Mark LT. Out of those vehicles he only has not had a major problem with the Mark LT, and the '08 Navi. Both of them only have about 30k miles on the odo so I don't think they've been given a full test yet :). He still says I drive a POS and I should have bought a Ford.

I've owned 2 GMs, 1 Cadillac (which I know is GM), 2 Fords, 1 Jeep, 1 Land Rover, and now an RSX. The 1st GM was reliable, but it was a 76' chevy vega. The 2nd GM and the Cadillac always had little shit wrong with them, same with the Ford but it was never expensive to fix. The Rover had absolutely top notch build quality, when the electrical system worked and it wasn't leaking oil or P/S fluid. I will probably buy mostly Imports now because of reliability and quality of fit/finish. My dad, although he mostly buys American, agrees with me because one of his most reliable vehicles was a Subaru.

i think by doing so, they support american companies and workers.

personally, i have stuck with japanese cars; honda and acura in particular, for their performance, reliability and value.

but i can see myself in the new taurus SHO or regal GS. ford and GM have stepped up their game a lot. chrysler, im not so sure about lol.

what kind of information are u looking for...you might wanna narrow it down because your request is vague
What do you consider about american cars as opposed to japanese cars when it comes to being an american citizen and looking to other countries to buy a car from. The request is vague because I'm not looking for anything super specific. I just want to see how people feel about purchasing cars not made in america. Im sure you know someone who only buys ex. Fords or Chevys simply for the fact that they are made in america, by americans... as a rule lol Just looking for some feedback.

i'd say to look for articles related to "ethnocentrism" in a database or something
Im familiar with the idea of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism but im not looking for the broad spectrum... Im looking more to see why many people have the idea of only buying american cars and the opposite. My paper is going to be directed with this forum thread as the main source of my paper. As well as the opinion on those who only buy american.
