I'm thinking about taking my car with me outside of the US for a while (couple of years+, for myself, not for sale), and I'm trying to figure out everything I'll have to pay here in States while my car is overseas.

So far i figured:
* NYS Registration: ~$50/yr (I need to have US license plates)
* NYS Insurance: found $500/yr (i'll need it for registration)

Besides inspection, I don't remember paying anything else, ever. But someone told me that they pay excise tax in MA every year, and it's around $400/yr. Do we pay that in New York?

I totally don't remember paying that much for having a car, period. Is there such tax in NY and i'm just having a brain fart?

I read following on one site, but it wasn't specific to New York State:
Unlike sales tax, which you pay only once during the time of purchase, you must pay excise tax annually, prior to registration.
Yet, I can't find anything on New York :( Can someone clear this up for me? Maybe someone recently re-newed NYS registration and has it fresh in memory?

Ok, there isn't.
I got through to the DMV, the only thing we pay is various fees which sum up to ~$130 for the first 2 years. It's less after that. I guess, other states have it different.
