Did some searching and found lots of threads from 2010 regarding which alpine or pioneer to get, but most of those are too expensive. I bought this as a budget car so I just want something I can hook my iphone into and listen to whatever I want, including podcasts. If its red and matches the lights, thats a plus. Basically I want to spend as little as possible. I dont have a terrible amount of experience hooking up electronics, so something that requires minimal modification/fits well is also a plus. I prefer a setup that has the actual iPod control cable, or has one able to be purchased separate which has good functionality.

TL;DR 2005 Type S totally stock everything. I just want something cheap to plug and play and use my iPhone. Must fit into dash with minimal modification and light up red.

Under a hundred bucks, lights up red, plays MP3 Cds. Plain jane.

I am running the slightly more expensive model, but I HATE the user interface on the head unit. Remote makes life so much easier. I like the sub output too, but I'm bypassing the stock bose amps.

Wait another month or so til after the CES in January and you can pick up higher end units for cheap when everyone starts clearing them out for the 2012 models. The unit you are looking at there will play stuff from your ipod/iphone but has no controls for it, move up to the DEH-3300UB and you get that and it is about 25 bucks more and if you buy from someplace like sonic electronic you will get the dash kit and wiring harness for free or nearly free.

No they are not a joke, having the ability to change tracks and playlists is what you want as well as the ability to charge from the same cable. Maybe you have never used a HU with a good user interface/integration but for some people all they want is to throw an Ipod in the glove box with 160 gig of music on it and forget about it. Granted I don't give a rats ass about it but I talk to customers daily that want that or to be able to plug their Iphone in when they get into the car and do thesame thing.

The problem is with alot of cars, you plug into the aftermarket stereo and lose your entire ability to control the iphone, it says "attached to device" or something. Then the only way to control it is by selecting before you even plug it in. Which is annoying if you want to swap albums every half an hour.

Well for me, either/or is fine. I like being able to use the dash because that means my eyes arent on my phone. That means using the iphone cable. But, using an Aux lets me very easily use the phones very nice interface to make changes, which is typically preferable at stop lights.

Whichever is cheapest.
