I was looking at putting a bullhead 1st and 2nd gear in and then going with a ep3 3rd through 5th and then putting in a tsx 6th

Heres the comparision table

My question is what needs to be done, or can this even be done. Are there any special parts or anything like that i need.

Also i know this is a noob question but the rsx 5th and 6th gear are the same gear ratios as the ep3 4th and 5th. Could the rsx 5th and 6th be used as 4th and 5th. Just curious. Thanks.

Thanks chris,

I was doing some more research I have a question for you. I was wondering whats the best way to spend some money. Heres my situation

Situation 1 is using the bull head gears w/ ep3 3rd through 5th and tsx 6th prob cost about $2200

Situation 2 is to buy a ep3 tranny and use a ep3 1st through 5th and txt 6th and then use a 4.0 final drive and upgrade the head (valves, springs, retainers) so that i can safely rev to 9K. Cost about $1500. The advantage is that in third my top speed would be 129 which is well above 1/4 trap time.

So my question is are my assumptions correct or have i missed anything. Basically I want to be able to top 2nd in the 1/8 (trap of around 90mph) and top 3rd in 1/4 (around 120). Here are the comparision tables

Transmission One
RPM Redline: 8650

Ratio Max MPH
1st Gear 2.615:1 52.29MPH
2nd Gear 1.66:1 82.36MPH
3rd Gear 1.212:1 112.81MPH
4th Gear 0.921:1 148.45MPH
5th Gear 0.738:1 185.27MPH
6th Gear 0.659:1 207.47MPH
Final Drive 4.388:1

Transmission Two
RPM Redline:
9000
Ratio Max MPH
1st Gear 3.062:1 50.63MPH
2nd Gear 1.769:1 87.64MPH
3rd Gear 1.212:1 127.91MPH
4th Gear 0.921:1 168.3MPH
5th Gear 0.738:1 210.06MPH
6th Gear 0.659:1 235.25MPH
Final Drive 4.05:1

that is a hard one because both have their advantages. Personally, I would maybe start with the EP3 transmission and see how it feels. Once you figure that out then play with the different final drive options (4.3 then down to a 4.0). I ran the EP3 with a 4.3 in the race car and really liked the first gear but I could only use three gears which really stunk. You want to use as many gears as you can because that gives you the most acceleration.

I agree. Thats my worry about the 4.0 Final drive. See I don't want to full throttle shift at the track however i feel that i am losing time every time i have to shift. So I have been trying to weigh longer gear & slower acceleration vs faster acceleration & more shifting and it's not a straight cut answer. I am not to worried about the relability aspect I believe w/ proper care the rsx gears are strong enough to handle the power i am putting down. I believe more harm is done by misshifts and full throttle shifts. See matt has it worst than I do because his rev limter is set at 7200 from the k24. So this is really kind for both of us. I know for his isntance he needs some insanely long gears, and he prob could get away with a 4.0. Your right though it just a matter of playing with it i guess i was just curious wat other ppl have tried and what did or didn't work so I didn't waste any money.

If you don't mind me asking what leads you to that conclusion cause the difference turns out to be around this

1st gear +3mph
2nd gear +5mph
3rd gear +8mph
4th gear +10mph
5th gear +20mph
Top speed difference if 15mph

it is about how you use the power with the turbo and where you can take it in fourth gear. Gear ratios and how you use them are not always based on math. If I just went off the math then I never would have found some of the goofier things that I tried.

So your view is there a difference where theory meets actuality. Well i guess i got to start some where... 4.05 fd sounds good as any place to start.

well i am going to try chris advice first and just try the 4.0 FD and then if that doesn't work i'll try an ep3 set w/ tsx 6th and see how that works.

that sounds like the smartest thing to do. I will probably end up buying a EP3 tranny and having the PPG installed in it. That way I can just pay for one tranny install instead of mutiple. I will hopefully get a twin disk around the same time so I can save money on another install ;)

keep us in mind for the build, no one has built more PPG's than us
 I second that I wish I had the money chris i would do it in a heartbeat man. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

So final decision for now 4.05 FD w/ a tsx 6th gear and we will see how it goes
