So, what is actually done during scheduled maintenance and "service front and rear brakes" is performed? (like in a Type C service)

Do they just clean up the brakes and put some grease in the shims and stuff? Do they do anything useful?

They glance at your brakes, check your fluid and then check the "serviced f/r brakes" :p

mmm...seriously...they probably check to see if your rotors are warped, how much of your brake pads you have left, check your brake fluids, check the brake lines and then some general maintainence

when i asked them i was told they take the caliper off and remove the pads, clean it up in there regrease everything and put it back together and they will usually say you need new pads at the end of it lol

...you can do it yourself with like $10 of stuff, anti-squeel and some type of caliper lube to regrease

This is something that everybody who turns a wrench should know how to do. Just like riding a bike or swimming, brakes, basic tune-up, and electrical trouble-shooting we should all at least know how to tackle. If for no other reason than protecting yourself from getting screwed over at a shop.
