VTEC is when the cams adjust to a set point at a certain time. i-VTEC is always adjusting to produce max power depending on conditions.

Anyway, I haven't driven in a car with VTEC.. just I-VTEC... is the "boost" feeling about the same between the two? Is one a bit harsher than the other?

It is pretty much the same.
