If you only notice it when volume is very high you might be overheating the voice coils, this will produce a very distinct smell. Listening for extended periods at very high sound levels and you might eventually melt the voice coils to a point where the amplifier cannot push them any longer. Some amplifiers are better at hiding distortion from the human ear than others, but it's still a clipped signal that's being sent to the speaker.

If you notice it even at lower volumes is could just be "break in" smells like mentioned above, or possibly the amplifier heatsink is coming into contact with something.

After market Headunit + Aftermarket Speakers + Stockwireing = MeltDown.
After market amp + small guage wires = Meltdown.

After market amp + small wire with no fuse on = meltdown or car on fire...

(R.I.P Grand am 92...)
