So I'm wondering what protects the OEM paint from acetone? I was able to remove touchup that has been on the car for months but the OEM paint did not seem to be affected by it.

Are the paints not the same? Is it the clearcoat?

You are correct about no clear on the touchup.

So, i have another question then. I sorta suspected that acetone might eat my clear so I tried acetone on some small scratches but it didn't do anything. I also tried acetone on an area I wet sanded with 2000 grit (which looks dull now; I have a NBP car). It didn't seem to disolve or anything. I was hoping acetone would smooth it out too.

ummm stop using acetone on the paint. the reason it didnt touch any scratches was because it probably ate throught the paint evenly, keeping the scratch but reduce=ing the total amount of clear coat.

also wetsanding requires you follow up with aggressive polishes to smooth of the the paint. you can do this successfully with a rotary polisher, but if you dont have experience with one i wouldnt reccomend trying it on your car. buy a panel from a junk yard and test out your skills w/ a rotary polisher.

acetone will never restore gloss to your paint, that is why it still looks dull.
