An aftermarket replacement for your stock catalytic converter. Just as there are aftermarket exhaust manifolds, intakes, etc. As the name states, its designed for better flow and results in some minimal gains. Use one if you're concerned about emissions testing and/or keeping your car street legal. But you also have to make sure you know the laws in your state. Because while some states allow aftermarket cats, others restrict you from messing with the stock cat at all.

...and since he is from so cal...not legal at all :( . I would have to disagree with it giving minimal gains because my high flow cat gave +10 whp and +10 wtq at 5800 rpm more than a another member with the same mods minus the cat. Even if it was 5 whp or 5 ft-lbs, for $90 its not that bad at all.

Your correct. I didn't even know the word "minimal" was in my post until you mentioned it. Mistyped it I guess. Back to the subject, as you can see with MmmotorNutz's post, the aftermarkt cat will give you great gains for not a lot of money.

You can't compare a dynosheet of your car to a dynosheet of another car on different days, with different temperatures and pressures, and on different dyno's. Too much variablitiy.
An aftermarket cat will open up a few ponies, and technically changing out your stock cat within 10 years of purcharse is illegal everywhere in the US. All you gotta say is a rock hit it on the highway. :)

I know that. I was comparing deltas not absolute power which we all know is not reliable.

It requires welding. It will work with any exhaust. It is illegal. But in some states you can get away with it, just don't get caught. Some states are lax enough that as long as you have a cat of some sort, you're all good.

Now.....search. You'll learn more that way.

Just look at it this way. If you just did the search then you wont get people bitchin and saying search at you and you wont be hating anyone and you wont be getting annoyed. Doing the search is just as easy someone telling ya the answer...its not that hard.

It's illegal in most states to remove a working cat (even if it's to put in another one). That's what makes it illegal first and foremost. Second, it's not OBDII compliant or carb legal. It will allow you to pass smog since it is a cat after all, but it is not certified, hence it being illegal.

Most people who use it won't have any issues with the law since they can't really prove that your OEM one wasn't defective, i.e. you can say you ran over a curb and smashed the OEM one and thus having a valid excuse to replace it. If a cop can look under your car and say "that's aftermarket cat, I'm giving you a ticket" then he is a supercop :p

They can't make you buy OEM parts so that's why they are allowed to make and sell HF cats in general I suppose.

This post was just as useless as telling someone to search for the answer. :spam:

I did answer him.

There is much more to learn than just waiting for someone to answer you. Search for what you want to know (it's all here somewhere), and you'll learn more by reading through all of the other stuff.

But excuse me, I'm sorry, that involves READING and LEARNING. Too much for ya?

Can someone compare and contrast the Carsound HF cat and the Random Technology HF Cat? Price, bolt on / weld on / gains / anything / naked women.

Random Tech has the friendly nickname of Random Crap.

I've heard many a horror story about rattles and worse from Random Tech cats. Overall they just don't seem to be up to the same quality as Carsounds, and given that they're almost the same price, I would definately go Carsound.

I have a 2.5" Carsound and it's rattle-free after 2 years.

Same price? On the store here it's well over 200 dollars, but the carsound is like 80 bucks. Are you running a race header or just the cat?

uhh.. ive had the random tech for a while, which i switched to from the carsound, because to find someone to weld it was a bitch..and the weld kept cracking (the engine flexes alot guys) so to have it re-welded when youre stuck out in the middle of nowhere with your exhaust dragging in winter sucks

The springs should be the part putting pressure on the flanges, not the bolt itself. If its only the bolt then things will break. Bolt goes through the holes and springs lay flush/flat on the flange. If not done in this manner, the exhaust system will not be able to flex under load and things will break, the same thing you are experiencing. Make sure the springs are the ones connecting the flanges together and not the bolt itself. The springs and the donut gasket are there for a reason, to give the exhaust system flexibility.
