Tein SSP, Clunking Noise, Loose Spring!@#

I have a set of Tein SSP's on my car. Somehow within a week the one on my front passenger side began to clank like it was loose when i would go over a sewer lid or anything small that would cause this to bump. I took the wheel off to try and tighten this. The spring seems to be able to move back and forth when i grab it and pull it. i tried to tighten up the coilover and turn the spring 180degrees. still does it. Any ideas?

Its likely the top nut.

You need to use a spanner wrench to secure the very top of the strut UNDER the wheel well. This will allow you to hold the piston from turning. Then torgue the top big center nut.

Your problem will likely be solved.

Will tightening up the top nut tighten up the spring so that it does not move?? help will be appreciated.

does having the spring loose cause the noises? It seems to be happening to me.

I dont understand why the spring is loose on one strut and not the other. They are both set to the same ride height. Is one spring smaller than the other?

That is what I am trying to figure out. The other side does not make the noise.

Does the spring being loose have anything to do with the top nut????

Listen to Mental Midget, that slack from your pillowball nut being loose will allow the spring to move from its perch and it'll make a weird 'clunk' sound as it moves through its range of motion......... chances are you can probably hand-tighten it enough (with the car on the ground) to see if there is any play..

If you do find play, jack up the car, take off the wheel and like he said before, use the spanner wrench to hold the shock, and pound that top nut with a ratchet

like mental and boredfast mentioned, dbl check the top nut
im assuming you did this already
if you can lift the strut up and down w/ the wheel off, then its the top nut
if not, raise your car

yeah, i encountered this problem a little while ago.
it had been 30k miles since i installed my suspension, so i was a bit rusty in diagnosing my problem, also the stress of being freakishly late to work already didnt have me in a good mood (not to mention i drove off with my wheel lock still on my wheel.... so that got lost too).

I was able to move the spring up and down about .75" and i couldnt for the life of me figure out why (i figured something in the shock tower had broken). Well, later that day, i popped the hood and was twisting the pillowball nut by hand... it tightened up, and i realized how much of a dumbass i was.

UPDATE:

1. Tightened pillow ball nut (use spanner wrench to hold shock)....check
2. Raised car.....check
3. Tightened everything up.....check

PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS!!! Help me out guys.

yeah, i really hope that's not the case for you. it just seems to me like a lot of people are frustrated about mystery noise issues with the SS-Ps. It's rather disappointing actually. I might consider having a professional take a look at my coilovers and giving me a diagnosis before I send them off to tein to get them worked on.
