exhaust header heat shield

Hey guys,

looked through the forums but couldnt find a straight up answer.. ive noticed a slight buzz sound when im off the throttle and the rpm's are winding down.. i thought it may be the 'i-vtec' cover making contact with the intake manifold so i just put some washers under it to see if it helps (i'll find out tomorrow when i head to work)..

but while i was looking around to see what else it could possibly be, i noticed that the heat shield that goes over the header is not 100% secure. the bolts holding it on at the top seem to be intact, but the bolt to hold it at the lower part of the shield has rusted through and no longer attached, so i can actually move the heat shield around..

what i'm wondering is, if the sound is not coming from the 'i-vtec' cover, and it is in fact coming from that heat shield, is it a bad idea for me to remove it altogether and not put a new one in its place?

Took a chance and did this on my other car and didnt have any trouble at all, but i thought i'd ask to be sure before i do it

any input would be appreciated, thanks!

yea i read about the heat shield for the cat making noise sometimes, but it seems to be coming from the under the hood as far as i can tell.. if it turns out that its not the 'i-vtec' cover or the header heat shield, then that will probably be the next place i check..

i just wanted to make sure its ok to remove the header shield, i wouldnt want to damage anything..

lots of people remove the exhaust manifold heat shield, apparently without any ill effects.

aftermarket headers lack provisions for replacing those heat shields, so a lot of people on crsx at least are running without that heat shield.

If it makes you feel better, as long as you keep your OEM EM, you can just slap a new heat shield on.

great! thanks a lot for the help. I drove to work this morning after putting those washers under the 'i-vtec' cover last night, and the sound has gone away.

But i will keep what you said in mind so that if by chance the heat shield gets any worse, i wont have to worry about taking it off. Thanks a lot

Having just removed mine to install a header, I'd advise you to remove it and replace it - if it's still in good enough condition where you can just wrench the bolts off.

Otherwise, leave it until it becomes an issue.

I had to hacksaw two of those nuts off, I live in the snow belt too, had ~ 70K miles on my '02.

The inner, lower bolt was a BITCH to get off. I could only maneuver a hacksaw blade with a gloved hand into that space. Took me several attempts to cut it all the way off. That bolt was too rusted and rounded to use a wrench, and the shape of the heatshield prevented me from laying a complete hacksaw in there. That sucked.

well after my drive this morning, ive noticed its nice and quiet now and i dont hear anything, so i dont think the heat shield is an issue at all right now, so im just going to leave it there the way it is until it becomes a problem..

i noticed that my bolts are pretty rusty too, so i dont want to have to go through something similar to what you had to do

Get a race header and a supercharger and your two problem areas disappear.

You can run without the heatshield on the stock exhaust manifold. It'll be fine. And you can run the car without that VTEC cover. If you want to keep them both on then there's the option of bending things into place so they don't rattle.

yea i ended up just putting washers under the cover to raise it up a bit and it got rid of the noise right away, i actually did want to remove it altogether but when i took it off i didnt like the way the stock fuel rail looked, the rail looks old and has kind of a tarnished look (best word i could think of to describe it).. i was thinking about upgrading to an aftermarket fuel rail so if i do i'll probably end up taking the cover off..

pretty sure im going to end up removing that heat shield though when i get a chance..
