Whistling Noise while accelerating

What’s up guys,

New to the forum, I just got my 06 Type S last week.
When I test drove the car everything seemed fine, I didn’t hear anything, or I chose not to hear it because I really wanted the car.....:vtec:
So over the course of this past week I’ve slowly been pinpointing little things that are wrong with the car, I’m trying to fix everything I can and get it up to par.
One thing I’ve noticed is that when I accelerate the car, in ANY of the gears, it’ll make a whistling sound. I’ve been doing lots of searching and people seem to say it’s “normal”. It does have an AEM short ram intake, but I’m not sure it would produce that kind of noise. If I press the gas very lightly it’ll stay quiet, if I press it more, it'll create the whistling, if I press down further and bottom out, it disappears. I can create the sound on demand if I choose to. I’ve been trying to pinpoint where the sound is coming from, but I haven’t really had much time to really take a good look under the hood. From everything I’ve been reading, people are saying it’s the intake, others say it’s possibly the belt, maybe a bad pulley, etc. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue before and can shed some light on it.
I’ll try to see if I can get a video of it. When I did the search I found other videos but their noises were not remotely close to the one my car is making.

That's normal, any intake with an open element air filter will make that noise. The whistle is due to air rushing around the throttle body blade. The whistle comes and goes based on throttle position. Both my sri and cai whistled anywhere from 3400-4000 rpms

If it's a belt or pulley, it'll sound more like a squeak. A vacuum leak could make the whistle as well, but my money is on that aem intake.

Update

Finally took some time to poke around under the hood. I was unable to reproduce the sound with the car parked. It will only do it in gear.
I recorded a video but it sounded way better on my phone than it does off of youtube.....might try to find something else to upload it on. You have to REALLY listen for it. Mainly around 2200-3000 RPM

Couple other fun things I found.

Hey man, can't hear much from the video. It's likely mfarmakas is right and it's just the noise passing through the intake. You could try a slight bit of oil of the blade to make sure it's not just a sticky hinge. Easy on the amount you apply though. If it's super annoying then try a different intake or go back to stock. Does the sound keep going after you pushed the sensor all the way in? It could be that gasket around the sensor is worn too. You might replace that gasket and seal it up tighter. Worth a try.

I like to change all the fluids on a new car when I get it to start new so I know when it all needs to be done. Good luck with it all.

Update

Ok gents, I thought I'd report back to you guys in case anyone is as OCD with things as I am.
So me being me, I was unable to live with that damn whistling that the car was making. After doing TONS of searching on all different car forums, I pinpointed it to the throttle body. I had read that people were grinding down a hole in the TB to make it go away.

So since I have my truck to drive and can set this one off to do some experimenting, I decided to go for it. I pulled of the TB and while doing so, obviously the first thing to go wrong was the damn gasket tore when pulling it off of its mounting screws. Great.

I finished pulling off the TB, and I ended up cleaning the IACV, which was pretty gunked up. I cleaned off the throttle body fully, using tons of carb cleaner, and I found what I was looking for.

The IACV hole is located at the bottom of the TB, small hole, sharp edges. I took to it with a dremel, VERY lightly grinded it down, then smoothed the edge of the hole all around. I was able to hit almost all of it pretty good, with the exception of the sides, since the dremel I had was a little big. I cleaned it off to remove all the shavings.

I re-installed, and i'm happy to report NO MORE WHISTLE. No changes to my idle, no check engine lights, and due to cleaning the IACV it feels a little torquier. Once it goes over 5k and VTEC hits, it sounds louder, a little meaner than before.

It wasn't exactly the prettiest job, but I still figured I'd share with everyone in case anyone else had the stomach to take a dremel to their throttle body :hb:

I took it out today and drove it around a bit, hit the gas pretty hard to test the whole powerband and had no issues. Will report back in a couple of days to update on this.
