haha I wonder who's orange oil pan that is?

My friend just picked up like 2 dozen of these units for his shop cause it is a great mod to help prevent problems and for when you do a cam swap.

I ended up swapping the reg bolts for some stainless ones and had to grind a small amount away for it to fit perfect. The chain was pressing against the left side and was preventing me from putting in the lower bolt. No big deal but something to look for when installing.

length of time depends on your knowledge and if the motor is in or out of your car.

I don't see how you can install this with the motor in the car so you will most likely need to take the motor out...after that it is simply taking off the cp and anything else blocking the timing chain cover. After the cover is off it is 2 bolts.

I wasn't directing my comment at Erik...
Lulz...

anyone have a picture of the stock part to compare? What is the main benefit of this? To keep more guard around the chain?
I don't know that there actually "is" a stock part. I think it's just part of the oil pump chain tensioner unit.

It makes cam swaps a breeze but the real advantage is that it pretty much prevents the chain from jumping a tooth on the crank sprocket in the event you have a tensioner failure. Between this and the Z3 top chain guide, even if the tensioner completely fails, I doubt the chain would jump the sprocket.

Just in case anyone was wondering, I ran aftermarket cams and valvetrain for about 8,000 miles on a new oem tensioner and it was pretty much destroyed when I replaced it a few days ago. So if you are running an after market valvetrain I would strongly suggest investing in one of these (if the motor is out) or an aftermarket tensioner.

just to add my 2 cents.. looks good, seen this concept on other cars and for the cost its well worth it... my only question is what happens over time.. i know sometime chains are known to "stretch" could this mod cause an issue after lets say 60,000KM? idk if its close enough that any small amount of slack might scrape/drag across it... i know if that happens you have an issue already, but my concern is can this greatly compound damage if said problem does arise?

just a random question :p
