Difficult 5th and 6th Gear

Hey guys. I just bought a 2006 RSX Type S. I was told by the owner the clutch had been replaced a while ago. But the thing is, whenever I am shifting, it takes a considerable amount of effort to slide the shift lever into 5th. And it takes even more effort to yank it back into 6th. And if I am in 5th and I need to downshift, it's even MORE difficult. 1st through 4th and reverse glide nice and smooth.

I'm wondering what the issue might be. Could it be my syncros? I have scheduled the car for a transmission fluid change as well. It has 100k miles on it and I doubt the tranny fluid has ever been changed. So I figured I'd go ahead and do that.

Does anyone have any other ideas for what might be going on in 5th and 6th gear for it to be so stiff and difficult to shift?

Thanks!

Oh, by the way, the car shifts into gear just fine, it just takes more effort than usual. There is no pop-out or grinding noises at all. It's just alot more difficult than it should be...

You may want to pop off the console and have a peek at the shifter box. Make sure no cables are twisted or obstructed. And the fluid change really does make a difference. Be sure to post photos so we (the raleigh crew) can wave atcha'

That makes me feel better hearing the transmission fluid change will make a difference.

I popped off the top of the center console. No cables are twisted or obstructed. Also, I noticed the linkage has no lubricant left on it. Would it be okay to spray a bit of WD-40 on the linkage joints and the base of the shift lever?

I'll post pics as soon as I can! Good to see the local members indeed! :D

WD-40 is not lubricant, use white lithium grease

Sure enough!! The cold air intake, that was installed by a previous owner, was in the way of the linkage. We adjusted the position and it shifts beautifully now! Thanks everybody! I was starting to fear the worst.

By the way...is it okay to put white lithium grease on the engine-bay side of the linkage?

Excellent!

So far as I know, the grease on the engine side is okay. I wouldn't go overboard. Just try and keep it inside the jacket of the cable. Some hardware stores sell something called a precision oiler. It's basically a small tube with a hollow needle. Kinda like you use to inflate footballs. But you can dump out the lightweight oil and substitute the lithium. I may have seen them at Radio Shack.
