Engine tapping / knocking / ticking

Hello All,

I’m new here!

I just recently purchased an Acura RSX 02, base model, less than a month ago at 105xxx miles.

I now have 106xxx miles and I’m hearing a strange tapping noise when the engine is warm, NOT when cold. Is this normal? Or should it be not making any sounds? It’s not ticking, maybe knocking slightly.

You be the judge. I have three videos as examples.

Before we get to that I will admit I didn’t check the car when warm when I first got it, so I have no idea if it was normal or not. The guy who had it before looked like he kept good care of it and had it for 9 years.

Anyway here’s the things I change sense I bought it.

- Conventional 5w20 oil to Amsoil Synthetic 5w30
- Amsoil Synchromesh Tranny Fluid
- Honda OEM power steering flush
- Honda OEM brake fluid flush
- Honda OEM coolant flush
- Change spark plugs, 6994 laser iridium
- Brakes, rotors and pads, etc.
- Other stuff cosmetically which doesn’t matter in this case

Another note I don’t hear anything rattling or knocking when accelerating.

I had a Toyota Celica GT before, which I blew the engine and I did hear knocking from that when I accelerated. It sounding like my lifters were bad, which I’m 99% certain this isn’t the case with the Acura.

Here are the videos. Not best quality, and I can re-do them if need be but hopefully you can help me out from just these. Thanks and much appreciated.

2. INSIDE GARAGE – warm engine, tapping -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IpYAPiL_fY
3. OUTISDE – cold engine, no tapping or very, very quiet tapping -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekbLWOm_Idk

Oh... Maybe I'm overreacting?

I don't have sound with this system, so didn't listen to your car. If it really does make a tick/knock like sound when warm that it does not while cold, it could be a small exhaust leak at one exhaust port. Metal expands when warm, so the gasket/manifold may shift just enough to leak when warm if something about them isn't perfect.

A valvetrain problem would probably be worse cold than warm.
And rod knock would probably be worse under load than at idle.

Engines do make various ticking sounds, everything from fuel injectors to the valves are contributing their bit of noise.
I'll give the exhaust a look-see and get back with my results.

Thanks guys.

Well don't try it, even if I'm wrong, which I'm 99% sure I'm not, I wouldn't want you blowing up your engine just to experiment.

I hit cancel right before 8000, I think if I can remember correctly... cause it seems to want to leave my memory because of how frightened I was; It probably hit 6900 - 7100 RPMS.

I checked my engine, looked for leaks, listened for any louder knocking and did a diagnostic on the freeway, accelerating and decelerating. I had no issues, so it seems I would be blessed or lucky or whatever, but I ain't doing that ever again!
