That's exactly what my problem is! thanks you're pro...

When I go over bumps or something, my car goes up and down and then "pop" as the car lands to regular driving height.

"you unloaded the springs too much where it's not at full contact with the seats" What is the solution to this problem? Does "preload" have anything to do with this problem? THanks for all the help DOHCtor!! rep+++++
You need to raise the lower lock nuts (preload the springs) so the spring fit snug, but doing this will make your car a little higher but not too noticeable.

Make sure you do this while the car is raised.

I'm sorry to keep bombarding you with questions but right now I feel that you're the only one who can help me out.

I have no clue what you told me to do because I'm a newb, but if I told the mechanic to raise the lower lock nuts and preload the springs, would he know what to do? Is this a trial and error process in which I need to keep raising the car bit by bit until the problem is fixed?

Last question for now: what is preload and how will that fix my problem?

Thanks so much Doc :D

You twist the lock nuts higher to preload the springs so they would not have any play. Just tell that to your mechanic, if he is inclined in this subject he should know what you mean.

just installed my megans and i am getting the popping noise in the front when turning the wheel mainly at low speeds. i followed the greasing procedure but it didnt work. did i just not grease it enough or something? how much grease needs to be applied?

what type of grease did you use?

crap i just started getting the popping noise when i turn in place or a low speeds... do you think anything is damaged? (just started doing it today).... I am going to a friend's place to lower my rear a little more and will try to lube it up like you said on the fronts. Did anything get damaged for you?

thanks!

Nothing got damage if it's not too long. But after a while you will tear the two O polyurethane rings that sit on the bottom and top of the spring, which can easily be replaced.

i used some synthetic high temp grease that i had used to grease parts when doing my clutch and flywheel install. after greasing the coilover properly should the moving parts of it move smoothly including twisting the shock body to adjust the height?

Im starting to wonder if i adjusted the ride height correctly or if maybe its too low in the front settings. Currently I have the front coilover adjusted as low as it will go and the back coilover is lowered about 1/2 an inch. This gives me an all around 1 finger gap on my car. now to adjust the height once i installed them on the car i loosened the lower lock nut. i then used the adjusting tool that came with it and twisted the upper perch either clockwise or counterclockwise depending on if i wanted to go higher or lower. now i never loosened the upper lock nut so i thought that by loosening the bottom lock nut and then twisting from the upper perch that i wasnt affecting the spring preload. am i wrong? i seemed to remember reading now that you have to partially unbolt the coilover after it is installed in order to adjust the height. can the height be adjusted properly with it still fully installed? im confused....

also just to let you guys know i get the sounds mainly when i turn the wheel when im stopped or at low speeds. however i do get it at times at higher speeds like 30-40 mph. i also got heard the noise once now going over a pretty large bump at an intersection at like 40 mph. the sounds seem to be coming strictly from the front coilovers.

Sorry I took so long to respond, I been really busy lately.

To adjust height while the coilovers are installed on the car you need to twist the shock body which is very hard to do. To make things easier you can use the spanner tool and hook it to the highest lock nut (the one that sits right below the spring) and turn it clock wise if you want to lower the height. If you want to raise it higher you need to hook the spanner tool on the middle lock nut, the one right below top lock nut and twist it counter clock wise. The whole shock body should twist and rotate too. If only the lock nuts are spinning, make sure you tighten those 2 upper lock nuts together real hard.

About the sound problem you're having, It all sounds very familiar. You just need to lube the pillow ball correctly. What type of grease did you use? A lot of people do them the lazy man way and just spray white lithium grease at the pillow ball while it's still installed on the car.

Hope this clear things up for you. I know it's really hard to follow directions where there are no pictures lol but good luck man.

before i installed the coilovers i lubed them with high temp synthetic grease. maybe i just didnt do a good enough job. also do you think that i might have the front adjusted too low since i have the front at the lowest setting?

If you have it set at the lowest setting, there shouldn't be any problem.

Here's a picture of my car at the lowest settings.

i wonder why different settings yield the same height from car to car. mine is set to the lowest in the front and only about 1/2 inch lowered in the back and yet i have a 1 finger gap all around.
The rear always sits lower than the front. It's your job to correct it.

no what i mean is this...you had your coilovers set on the lowest settings all around and had like 1 finger gap all around right? well i had my front settings on the lowest but my rear no where near the lowest setting and i had about 1.5 finger gap all around. if i lowered my rear settings all the way like you my rear would sit way lower than my front.

If you look closely at the picture you would notice that my rear has no finger gap and the front has about 1/2 to 1 finger gap.

well tommorrow i am taking my front coilovers off again and lubing them up some more. you are telling me that the popping sound doesnt have to do with the settings being too low in the front though right? i thought i remembered you saying somewhere that if you are getting the popping sounds when driving straight over bumps that you might need to raise the settings higher. i get the sound mostly when i turn the wheel but also sometimes when going straight over bumps.
