Power Steering Fluid Flush?

My 03 has 53K miles and I've never checked the ps fluid in my 6 years of ownership until yesterday  It seems fairly dirty so I'm looking to flush it.

The procedure seems simple enough following the service manual (see attached), but I'm a little hesitant because it seems like you are essentially draining the entire reservoir, running the power steering pump dry, refilling, and then bleeding out the air.

Just wanted to see if anyone had followed this procedure and if any problems were encountered. From the threads I read on here regarding flushing ps fluid, it seems like most on here do it differently...

I followed the Helms method and within a month or two my P/S pump started to whine......fearing failure I bought a salvaged pump from ebay and replaced the original pump.

Since telling other DIYers that I ran the pump dry, I've been told many times that the system should never be without fluid. Apparently not even for a few moments.

This is why I opt to change out some fluid at every oil change.

1) What you do is leave the system off, and suck out fluid from the container and then fill it all the way up with new fluid.

2) Then with the car running, suck out fluid (now dirty) to just above the suction hose, and fill with new fluid.

Repeat #2 process a few times and you should be good to go.

Thats the safer way of doing it.

I just followed the Acura directions for replacing the power steering fluid and I developed a whine and a lot of air bubbles. Drove it and shut it off, started it back up and the whine is gone.

However, I drove to work this morning and now i have a ticking noise from the power steering pump but no problems with steering itself. No air bubbles present in the reservoir. Fluid level in the reservoir is at the top line.

Any suggestions?
