Side Airbag Deployed, Possible to Bypass and Run with Front Airbags Only?

Tried posting this in DIY because I will write one up once I figure it out but I wasn't getting a lot of help over there...

What I want to do is run the front airbags only with no airbag light from missing side airbag(s), something akin to this: http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=141572

The side airbags are tiny and afford little protection in a crash so I don't want to spend the $$$ to replace my one that blew. Also when seats are upgraded the side airbags are removed so there is a lot of incentive to run with front airbags only and bypass the side airbags.

I'll do some testing when I get my new srs unit but I think a resistor should be able to take the place of the airbag and an open circuit should act like an impact sensor.

I'll test my side impact sensors but I'm pretty sure they are very simple: closed circuits when triggered, open circuits when new. And if a trigger is never given the side "airbag" (resistor) will never be fired (which would destroy the resistor) so the car will act like all four sensors are working and turn off the srs light when only the front two sensors will ever give any trigger.

Any thoughts? I'll do a write up if I'm successful but I'm just surprised there isn't more interest considering all the people with aftermarket seats...

The deployment complicates things. You'll have to replace the srs and the impact sensor and keep (and possibly replace) the OPDS computer. The impact sensors communicate with the srs digitally, so an open won't simulate the sensor. Once you get back to a working system this thread may help:
