slow turbo spool...why?

I am currently using a T3/T04E turbo; I have a 2.5" downpipe, 2.25" intercooler piping, no exhaust leaks, no known boost leaks, and the oil in the car has not seen over 25 miles.

i used to reach 7psi at around 3500rpm and now i see 7psi at around 4500rpm, 15psi at around 5500rpm, and 20psi from 6000rpm on up.

what might be causing my turbo to spool slower than it should? :dontknow:

What Weight oil are you using? DId you recently switch to something heavier?

I know that t3/t4 full spool at 4500 rpm, dont sound like u have a problem seems normal just takes a lil longer for the big ones to spool.
When I was only boosting 7psi I was fully spooled at 3500rpm with a 2.5" downpipe. I think a lot of the guys with 3" downpipes that are only boosting 7psi are fully spooled around 3000rpm.

Oh yeah..forgot to mention, this is a T3/T04E.

I was using 15w-50 synthetic and just recently switched back to 10w-30 (temporary).

My bro t3/t4 with a 2.5 dp is spooled by 4500.
What kind of car is it? If it's not an RSX that may be why its spooled later.

A few things to check.

Check and make sure all your couplers are tight. If you are leaking boost it will cause this to happen.

Make sure you air filter is clean. If it is dirty and restricting the flow this will also cause the boost to lag a little.

You may want to turn the waste gate screw in a little and then back it out again so that the spring gets compressed and released.

Check and make sure you BOV is not sticking.

If you still have problems give us a call at the shop. You can also PM either myself or turbotech although you would probably be better off sending us a PM on our forums since we can accept an unlimited number of them.

When did your turbo speeds change, could you corrolate the noticed changes with the switch in oil weights?

When I switched from 10W30 to 15W50, the added friction on my turbo bearing, caused my turbo to spool much much slower.. Over 1000 RPM later...

However, if your are exsperiencing a slow down after switching to a lighter weight oil, you may be seeing the effects of a bearing which has broken it with one weight, but is not being fully supported with the lighter oil...

I would only consider this a possability after ruling out that there are no boost or exhaust leaks at all... After that, try switching back to the heavier oil, and see if you resume your previous boosting characteristics...

See ya,

1st check for exhaust leaks. But if its not that it could be the wastegate spring. What wastegate sping are you using? The lower the spring rate the longer it will take to build boost.

also another thing to keep in mind....air temperature....at night...my car feels like it comes alive alot sooner than it does in 100 degree temps....

Hey zotex.....whats up??

A little off topic, but I was wondering if you were going to go down to nopi this september?? If so, we should get a little meet going on or something. Plus I would like to compare the full CN kit to my half-ass set-up. BTW, have you been to the dyno on 20lbs yet? talk to ya later

Ohh yeah, check your IC pipe connectors. I was only hitting 15lbs and found one of the worm gears worked itself loose, and I picked up the other 3lbs that I was looking for.

thanks for all of the ideas. i haven't had time to look into things as of yet. hopefully im looking at a boost leak somewhere and nothing serious.

What's up man, long time no talk. Yes, I am going to NOPI..just let me know some info on a meet if you know of any and maybe we can ride down together. The car hasn't been on a dyno yet. I've been waiting on Guardian for the most part and I also have some bugs I need to get worked out of the car...such as this one. Everytime I fix something something else breaks..lol

Is your intercooler piping holding together well on 20psi? Mine keeps blowing off at or near the turbo.

That would be cool. Im wanting to enter my car in the dyno challenge for the 4-cylinder turbo class. As long as CN's house car dont come up...I think that Ive got a chance. With the 3" exhaust I just put on, I have a little more room to play with my boost. Hopefully at 20psi...I will be hitting around 405whp...on pump gas. If I go to NOPI, then there will be a map for something like 22-24lbs on race gas. That should be good for 440-465whp. I cant wait :spin:

The only problem I have had with the IC piping blowing off it on the "hot" side of the intercooler. But since I put those expensive ass hose techniques clamps on there, I have had no problems. I know that I about shit myself the first time that the pipe blew off. I was on the interstate hitting 18lbs in 5th (slightly speeding ;) ) and next thing I know.....BOOOMMMM!!!. Luckily it was just the pipe, not a piston blowing a hole through my hood. But honestly, it dont sound too serious. Have put a silencer on your exhaust or bent it up on someones driveway :dontknow: ...that makes a BIG difference.

Eh not a big deal, it's just some turbo lag, you do have to put into consideration your running a bigger turbo. Now if you were running a t25 or something and wasnt boostin till 4K then you got a problem. When I ran a Super 60 T3/t4 turbo on my B20-Integ my spool didnt even really come hard into play until between 3400-3700 rpm and I only boost 8 lbs at the time. Good luck anyways though if there is a problem even though I dont think there is

i was thinking about entering the dyno contest too. lol 25psi

anyway...im not running an exhaust... :D
today i found an intercooler piping that was a little bit disconnected from the coupler so i hope that takes care of the addition lag i am dealing with.

the turbo used to be spooled by 3500, not 4500 so i know something is not normal...not your usual turbo lag. but hopefully i found the problem with that intercooler piping being somewhat disconnected.

25lbs!!!....damn you..j/k. Its all in the tuning though :spin: . Im almost positive that the loose IC pipe would cause you the problem that your dealing with. Ohh did I mention that my t3/t4 starts building around 2700 and full boost by 5500...hehehe.

As far as that meet goes for NOPI, I was thinking about PMing a couple of local rsx'ers. Heres who Im thinking right now: silverbullet, scottatyamaha (traitor now drives an evo), xcell, you, me, swiffty, and anyone else in the area. Can you think of anybody else?? Let me know.

I made the trip down to NOPI a few years back... It was pretty cool.. We rode in the Super Street tour, all the way from Philadelphia. By the time we arrived in Atlanta, there were seeral thousand cars heading the same way!

Everyone who had arrived in the tour, took a lap around the Atlanta Motor speedway.. That was sort of exciting...

I may see some of you guys down there this year, Havn't decided yet..

anyway, yea im already planning on riding down to NOPI with a couple people (no rsx's), but i do know of quite a few people with rsx's in charlotte; i never see any of them. I just know that there are a lot of ppl talking in the NC area chat thread that live in charlotte. ill mention something to them...or you could if you want. lol
